The History of Rolex Watches
Rolex is a luxury Swiss watch company founded in London by two brother-in-laws Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis. They flourished as young business men , although Hans always dreamed of creating a wristwatch, something that was not popular in the early 20th century, one that was both classy and reliable; unfortunately it was yet to be invented. Some time later the brother in laws wanted to reinvent the company with a catchy name something easy to pronounce,Hans Wilsdorf decided they would name the brand Rolex the company was changed from Wilsdorf and Davis in 1908 and gained its trademark as Rolex.
The First Rolex Watch
The first ever wrist watch released by Rolex was the Oyster , this was a game changer year (1926) for Rolex. The Oyster was a popular waterproof watch designed with optimal case protection as well as being dust proof. Next came the Oyster Perpetual in 1931 this was the first of its kind with a self winding mechanism exclusive to the Rolex brand at the time as well as its amazing dust and waterproof features.
The Growth & Popularity of Rolex
1940s watch making changed forever when Rolex released their next show stopping model in the world of watches the Date Just.It had many amazing features but its main being it displayed the exact date inside the dial window. It’s the best watch by far to come out of the Oyster collection originally designed for men but within a decade or so it became something sought after with women also.
Rolex watches weren’t just worn by everyday people, they were also worn by people taking part in sports such as swimming , deep sea diving and mountain climbing. Sir Edmond Hillary and Tenzing Norgay wore them whilst climbing Mount Everest in 1953 resulting in the release of the well known Oyster Perpetual Explorer followed by the Oyster Perpetual Mil gauss in 1956. In the 1960s came the deep sea specially designed to face the worst of the worse weather conditions.
